Starcrossed Shifters Page 13

Hank said, “Gunner, do you love Megan?”

“With my whole heart and soul,” Gunner said fiercely.

“Excellent,” Blakely said with a long-suffering sigh. “Sounds like the two of you are mates to me. I declare this feud over. Hank?”

  “Sounds good.”

  Megan whispered, “What?”

Everyone started talking. Henry shifted and began yelling his head off, running about his throne as he barked and growled until Blakely glared at him and said, “Oh shut up, Henry! I know that sustaining this feud was all you were ever interested in as an alpha, but find a new hobby. You have a nice piece of land here. Grow some grapes or something.”

Henry curled up on his throne and appeared to sulk.

The guards immediately let go of Megan and Gunner who gaped at each other, blinking dumbly for a moment before Lane hollered, “Kiss her, you fool!”

Gunner grabbed Megan’s hand and tugged her close before dipping her backward into a dramatic kiss that was met with equal parts cheers and growls of disgust. Yet no one could argue with the word of the clan’s alphas. A new day had just been pronounced and there was nothing anyone could do about it.

“Oh, what about John Byeler?” Gunner said, wrapping his arm around Megan’s waist. The bystanders were filing out of the room and some seemed content enough with how things had ended and they seemed to be arguing with the ones who were shaking their heads in disgust.

“John Byeler,” Hank said, rolling his eyes. “He was banished from his pack for tormenting the pups and harassing the females. He attempted to kill one of his own packmates. He’s just a bitter lone wolf making trouble. We’ll make sure he won’t make trouble again. My guys are picking him up from your offices. I understand he’s locked in the supply closet.”

“I wonder who that friend is,” Megan muttered, resting her head on Gunner’s shoulder. “Somebody was helping us. Somebody fixed all this and we don’t even know who.”

“Guardian angel?” Gunner ventured, kissing her hair.

Megan squeezed him tight and said, “Sure, why not?”

“Hey, Lady and the Tramp!” Lane said behind her. “Can we get outta here now? I’m starving!”

“I always thought I’d be throwing company Christmas parties here,” Megan said, as she filled another bowl with pita chips. “Not banquets celebrating a truce between shifter clans.”

Her condo had not been so crowded since the time Lane had thrown an “influencer party.” On the patio, Gunner’s pack was mingling with Megan’s leash. She wasn’t sure that Sean wasn’t making eyes at Jan either. They were barbecuing ribs as 80s pop blared from Megan’s speakers.

Inside, the place was full of hangers-on, both wolves and foxes who’d heard news of the truce. Megan had never known there were so many shifters sympathetic to the idea of peace between the clans. Her mother and father had shown up. They were talking to Charles and Hank on the sofa. Her mother only seemed delighted when she’d met Gunner, though her father had said they’d both been nearly paralyzed with shock until they’d spoken to Charles.

“I think it’s absolutely wonderful!” Her mother was saying now. She’d worn a designer gown for the occasion and she was draped in beads. A silver fox with diamond eyes sat in the middle of a choker at her neck. “Think of it! My Megan is at the forefront of a new era of peace! Can you imagine!”

“Told you,” Megan said to Gunner as he squeezed her from behind, kissing his way up her neck. She dropped the bag of pita chips and turn in the circle of his arms to kiss his lips. “She loves the drama. What about your parents? I’d like to meet them.”

“They’re pestering Bryan for information about my job,” Gunner mumbled, and pecked her lips again.

“Poor Bryan,” Megan said, giggling. He was the only human in the condo. She was not sure he was aware of that.

“Hey, everybody!” Megan said. She reached behind Gunner to turn the volume down on the speakers. “The girls brought over some swag from WellDrop! It’s just extra stuff, like samples we’re not distributing.” She gestured to the several open boxes of gift bags lined up near the front door. “So help yourselves!”

A mad rush to the gift bags ensued and Gunner chuckled into her neck. Megan grinned back at him and frowned at an unfamiliar face. A short, dark-haired woman in a black, leather jacket was scarfing down chips and artichoke dip in the corner next to a little cluster of hipster wolves. She was nodding along with what they were saying but did not seem interested. Megan couldn’t make out her scent at all. Now she rose and eased her way through the horde grabbing gift bags, coming away with two of her own.

“Who’s that?” Megan asked, nodding at her.

Gunner glanced over and shrugged. “No idea. I think she called me ‘completely useless’ once though. Hey…”

Megan turned to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Hmm?”

  “I love you, baby.”

Megan rested her forehead against his and whispered, “I love you too.”

  Epilogue

“So, all in all,” Delilah said, raising her glass of three-hundred-year-old whiskey, “it was a smooth mission! I mean except for the part where Oracle screwed me and I no idea what was going on at all. That wasn’t ideal. But other than that...”

Katz leaned on his hand and smiled widely at her. They had been celebrating the completion of her mission at The Duke’s, Delilah’s favorite dive bar in the Angelic Dimension. Even Katz’s eyes seemed to be smiling at her and she thought yet again that he must have been the prettiest person she’d ever seen. She wondered if that was because he was an angel or if he was a reformed human who had looked that way on earth.

“You wouldn’t have been screwed over,” Katz pointed out, “if you had listened to me-”

“Okay, okay,” Delilah said, nodding. “You might potentially possibly perhaps have a point.”

“Oh gosh, thanks, Delilah.” Katz chuckled and clinked her glass with his. “That’s sooo generous of you.”

“I thought so,” Delilah said loftily, resting her chin on her glass.

“What is it you said to Charles Blakely anyway?” Katz said, squinting at her. “You made peace between the foxes and the wolves by what, extolling the power of true love?” He raised his eyes, hopefully.

“I mean, yeah, basically,” Delilah said, her voice going up a little high. “Doesn’t mean I believe in all that balderdash. But it did the job, right?”

“You’re a softie,” Katz said with a sense of triumph.

“Ha!” Delilah said, though she felt a little bit as if she had been caught at something. “You wish.”

  “I wish and I know!”

“Whatever. I won.” She shrugged and took another sip of her drink.

“Locking Byeler in the closet was a little…” Katz waved his hand and grimaced. “Interveney.”

“Okay, that was not my fault! Oracle wasn’t helping me!”

“Which is the case I made to the Council,” Katz said. He laughed and squeezed her shoulder and Delilah blushed and told herself it was just because of the booze. “Looks like there will always be a case I’m making to the Council on your behalf. Such a troublemaker.”

“I live to torment you,” she said, batting her eyes.

“And I live to torment you back,” he said smoothly. “Which is why I got to choose your next mission.”

“Don’t tell me,” Delilah said, rolling her eyes. “A vampire’s in love with a garlic farmer or something.”

“Mountain lion shifter,” Katz said, motioning the Duke for another drink. “In love with a mountain lion shifter. Los Angeles.”

“Hmm.” Delilah raised an eyebrow. “Are they mortal enemies?”

  “Nope.”

“Is there a crazy wizard cult that wants to turn people into monsters?”

“Nope.” Katz threw back the rest of his drink, took the shot from the Duke and threw that one back on top of it.

“Then what is it? “Delilah said darkly. “It’s always s
omething. What have you done to me?”

Katz patted her shoulder and whispered, “The guy’s in a coma.”

Delilah frowned and said, “How are they supposed to fall in love if one’s in a coma?”

Katz shrugged. “Dunno!” He took his white, denim jacket from the back of his chair and put it on and waved goodbye to the Duke before throwing Delilah a wink. “You’ll figure it out, I’m sure.”

“Well, is he waking up soon?” Delilah yelled after him.

  “I dunno!”

  “Katz!”

“You can do it, Delilah!” Katz said, pumping his fist as he blew through the door. “I believe in you!”

Delilah sighed heavily and shook her head. “Stupid angels.”
